I'm still working on the 2nd grade Pirate word ladders, I've got 10 of the 40 done but I thought I would release one of them early. See if your kids can climb the ladder to make can not become do. Click on the file below to download the word ladder.

It's been awhile since my last post because I've been working hard on a new product. Pirate Word Ladders.  In this e-book you will find 40 reproducible Pirate word ladders. These word ladders are a great way for students to analyze words and will help students with decoding as well as spelling. Using Word Ladders Students will start at the bottom of the word ladder and use the directions and clues to create new words as they move to the top of each word ladder. Example The word ladder starts with the word Jack. The directions tell you to change the first letter and the clue is, “Put your homework in your back______.” The word that you need to make is pack. I've just finished a new e-book called Word Investigation. This book is full of graphic organizers that you can use to analysis morphemes in words. Doing this activity will help your students to recognize patterns in words, which in turn will help them to build their vocabularies, become better spellers and decode big words. These graphic organizers are based on the idea of Morphemic Triangles by Rod Winters. To learn more about them I suggest you read the article he wrote for the Reading Teacher. Winters, R.. (2009). To continue with my series on vocabulary development, I've decided to tackle a common problem that readers face when they've learned to decode small words but are stumped when they come across longer and more complex words. A great vocabulary learning activity that you can use to help overcome this hurdle is a activity that I first learned about from the book Phonics they use by Patricia M. Cunningham called Big Word Collector.
 To encourage my students to increase their word collections I've created these great reading awards.

I've finished creating the template for the color hot dog contraction printable. And here is what the finished version of the dog will look like. You can laminate the dog and use it to teach many different contractions. When you open up the dog you will be able to see the missing letters.  Use to teach contractions This will be able to download as a part of my contraction unit. My next step? I need to create a lesson on contractions using the hot dog model.  This hotdog contraction craft is going to be included in my contractions unit. I've made it available for a limited time free, you can download it by clicking on the link below. The idea for this craft is that you'll write the contraction on the dog, and the missing letters on the strip. You glue the strip to the dog and when you open the dog further you see the long form of the contraction. I'm going to have a larger color version of this craft available as well. The color one can be laminated and used over and over again. It can also be used as a guide for students so they understand what their complete dog will look like. After students have completed the craft they can be used to create a bullitin board, or gathered toghether to make a classroom contraction book. This poster is going to be a part of unit I'm creating on teaching contractions. Included in the unit are going to be crafts, bullitin board ideas, worksheets, activities, games, and of course this new poster.
