Knowing and using alphabetical order is an essential skill that students will use throughout their life. From finding words in a dictionary to finding books in a library, this skill is also extremely important to a students academic career. In this download you will receive a game board, small, medium and large alphabet cards, a pieces pouch, and directions on how to play the game.
Directions Draw two alphabet cards and place them in alphabetical order on the first two places of your game board. Continue drawing and placing alphabet cards until you have filled all the spots on your game board. Rule - You may only have two cards in your hand at a time. Two Players Played the same as in the way above except both players have a game board and the first person who has all six letters arranged correctly in alphabetical order wins. |
This is a two player abc game where students draw a letter and place it in the middle. Then the rest of the letters are divided and kids place the letters that are on their side of the alphabet down. The student who has the most letters tugging on the rope wins.

Using the game Students start by matching the first letters of the words on the mat. If two or more words start with the same letter they then move to the second column and the second letter. If the second letter is also the same they move on to the third. There is one word sort in this download that requires students to move to the fourth letter.

Sorting the classroom library
A great practical idea for practice alphabetical order is to have your students help you alphabetize your classroom library.
Have some book categories already sorted and in each set have 5-10 books that they need to alphabetize. Have them sort the books by the authors last name. This activity will let you organize your classroom library, have your students become more skilled at putting things in alphabetical order, and as a bonus your students will also become more familiar with how to find books in your classroom library. |
Using student's namesHave students write their names on cards. Collect the cards and then have them sort the names, a few at a time, into alphabetical order.
