Using the game Students start by matching the first letters of the words on the mat. If two or more words start with the same letter they then move to the second column and the second letter. If the second letter is also the same they move on to the third. There is one word sort in this download that requires students to move to the fourth letter.

In the game, students will match the bones (word) to a dog bowl (word family.) You can also make this into a two player game by having the students each pick a side. They would need to take turns choosing cards and matching them to their dog bowls. Whoever gets 2 bones into each of their dog bowls first wins. These games are great as centers or to take home as homework.
