Dictionary Games and Activities
Dictionary Race
A challenging word is given and students must race to find out the definition of the word. This can be played as a whole class activity or you can prepare pre-made word lists for groups to play with. You can divide the class into teams and have them race around on a tract. With this approach it might take several games to have someone reach the end. This might also be an exciting way to introduce vocabulary words to a class.

Fictionary
Students must find a word that they think that the rest of the class doesn't know. They will then write the definition of the word on a card and the other students will each write their own made-up definition. The picker then reads all of the definition and the other students will try to pick the correct definition.
Scoring 1 point - a student chooses the correct word 2 points- for are given to the a student who writes a false definition that other students choose. 3 points - for a student who chooses a word that no one guesses the correct definition. |

Dictionary Detective
Give students a series of clues and have them find words that that match all of those clues. They will enjoy trying to find more than one word that matches the clues. The file below has 64 different game cards.
