Teaching Vocabulary
Much of the time vocabulary instruction in the classroom is tedious and the new words are quickly forgotten. However, vocabulary knowledge is one of the best predictors of reading achievement so teachers needs to spend time and effort to teach vocabulary. To teach vocabulary effectively you need to get your kids to be actively involved in the learning experience.
- Don't underestimate how much vocabulary can be gained through reading a wide range of books. The most important things you can do to help them increase their vocabulary is to give them time to read and teach them strategies to determine the meaning of new words when reading.
