First of all, in this chapter Donalyn Miller focuses on using positive terms to classify students as readers. Instead of calling a student a struggling reader, they're a developing reader. A reluctant reader is now called a dormant reader. Good readers who read on their own but don't particularly like the reading that they do for school are now called underground readers. I'm all for seeing my students in a positive light but I don't see any value in changing what we call something. Words are symbolic. They don't have any meaning in and of themselves. The only meaning that they have are the meanings that we give to them. |
Sorry about the rant, I'd love to hear what ya'all think about changing the names of types of reading to more positive terms.
I must believe that my students are readers - or will be readers - so that they can believe it. - Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer, pg 23
I hope your all having a great summer. I'm currently working on a great new back to school product that I'm very excited about.
