I've been experimenting with, for lack of a better term, online reading sites. One of the sites I enjoy is Shelfari. I like for really only one reason, right now and that is because of a reading group called the 1001 books you need to read before you die. Each month they choose 3 books to read as a group. I have yet to have a month where I've read all 3, but choosing to read some of the books they've suggested has given me a lot more variety in the books I've been reading. The book for last month that I've ready was Grimus by Salman Rushdie. If I had only one word to describe this book it would be bizarre. The book is a cross between science fiction and fantasy and I suppose some of you English teachers out there would cringe about the way he keeps jumping from 1st person to 3rd. The bottom line is that this is an extremely creative and imaginative work. |
Another option that I've been using to find new books to read is BookPsychic. You rate books that you've already read and then it suggests books to you that you might enjoy. One of the books they've suggested was The Lovely Bones which I just finished earlier this week. It is about how a girl who was murdered watches over her family as they deal with the grief of losing her. It was a great book that I really enjoyed. 5 stars. |
Lately I've been getting interested in essential oils and I read this book, mainly because it was the only book that my library had on essential oils. I have to say it was an interesting read but it was a little over my head. The the subtitle say the Science of Advance Aromatherapy and its not lying when it says advanced. I uses a lot of chemistry terms. It defines them at the beginning but that wasn't quite enough for me to understand all of the terms that they were using. |
Finally the book I'm reading now is a current history book called Bringing down Gaddafi, on the Ground with the Libyan rebels by Andrei Netto. I got this book from LibraryThings early review books. What happens is that each month Library Thing has a list of book giveaways, you choose books that you interested in and if your selected they mail you the book in return for writing a review of the book after you've read it. There are children's books as well but many people request them to the odds of getting those are a bit lower than the others. I've only read 3 chapters of the book so far, but it is extremely well written and I really liked the historic chapter about the county. It helps to give a wider viewpoint of how the conflict started. |
